Homeowner's insurance provides coverage for the dwelling (actual dwelling), personal belongings, living expenses, and personal liability. Since the home is often the largest investment one owns, it is important to ensure this asset is suitably insured. Homeowner's policies can be extended with an additional rider (extension to your policy) for precious jewelry, art, and other valuables that have coverage limitations in a standard policy.  Homeowners may also want to consider an Umbrella Liability insurance policy for additional liability protection. Coverage for earthquake and flood damage is not covered in a standard homeowners policy and can be supplemented with earthquake and/or flood insurance.

Renter's Insurance is much like homeowner's insurance, but it does not cover the actual dwelling. Renter's Insurance provides coverage for personal belongings, living expenses, and personal liability. While there are limitations on jewelry and other valuables, this can be augmented with an additional rider.
